Best decision ever! (Long review) Cane Corso, 2.5 year old male. He was completely ok and socialized with people. Maybe didn’t have the best manners but wasn’t aggressive. Right around 2 years old, he stopped liking anyone outside the family. He had snipped at 2 people and it felt like we started living in a prison because we couldn’t/wouldn’t let anyone over out of fear. We got referred to Taylor made working dogs and this saved our lives and our dog’s. We did a behavioral program and then a training program. He said I can’t guarantee he will like every one, but he will listen. Which is what we needed. Our dog is not crate trained due to previous training experience NOT WITH TAULOR MADE. So our dog listening when we put in place and staying there no matter what brought a level of safety and security I can’t describe. For him, us, and visitors. Have manageable expectations, your dog learned what was acceptable from you. So when they come back they will try (my dog was stubborn so he tried really hard) to fall back into old habits. This is where you hold you accountable, learn what Chris has to teach you you and implement it all day every day. We’ve had our dog back for about a month. He is at the point where I Alamo don’t have to hold his leash when we walk, I do because I have trust issues, but sometimes I let go just to see if he wanders and he doesn’t. He stays in place, we’ve had visitors over and spend the night with no issues. We take him to parks and around the town and he’s perfectly fine. Chris did everything he needed to do to get my dog acting right! Then he gave me and my family all the tools to be successful at home. I am so grateful for Chris and his team and everything they have done for us. 1000% recommend! Be serious about what you want and have follow through or it’s your dog’s life at risk.

I can’t say enough great things about Taylor Made Working Dogs and Chris Taylor! The work Chris has done with my dog, King, has been incredible. The difference in King’s obedience, confidence, and overall behavior is amazing. One of the biggest improvements I’ve noticed is how well King handles populated and busy environments. He stays calm, focused, and obedient even with people and distractions around him. That has made a huge difference in my confidence taking King out in public. Chris is knowledgeable, professional, patient, and clearly understands how to bring out the best in the dogs he works with. You can tell he genuinely cares about both the dog and the owner and wants them to succeed together. If you’re looking for someone you can trust with your dog’s training, I highly recommend Chris Taylor and Taylor Made Working Dogs. The results with King speak for themselves. Absolutely a 5-star experience!

We boarded our three dogs/babies while we were on vacation in San Diego at Taylor Made. It was a great comfort knowing they were being well cared for close to where we were staying. They sent pictures regularly and kept me updated on how they were doing. We had a smooth drop off last week and wonderful pick up today! We will be back again. I can already see improvements in their behavior and a calmness that wasn’t there before.

Our puppy Koba has been nothing but a blessing since we got her. Amazing temperament that does amazing with our 10 y.o Shepherd and two kids. She picks up on training super fast and loves being outside. She will play all day but also loves to take naps with plenty of belly rubs.

I have a two year old Cane Corso that was really becoming difficult to manage. Six weeks with Kris at Taylor Made Working Dogs and I picked up a completely different dog.He actually listens now, walks without pulling, and holds a stay when I need him to. Kris clearly knows this breed on a level that's hard to find. Worth every penny

Couldn’t be a bigger fan of Kris and the team at Taylor Made. I had just lost a Gsd and i needed to make sure we had a dog with the right temperament and training. He made sure to match me with the right dog and the training he provided it was fantastic. He was patient with all of our questions, thorough with the training/education for my wife and I and he’s been extremely responsive every time I have a question. He genuinely cares about these dogs and it shows. Willie has integrated into our home seamlessly, we know he’ll be great with our future kids and we couldn’t be happier. Couldn’t be a bigger fan of the work they do, the quality of their dogs and the service they provide.

I meet Kris years ago via a mutual “dog” friend when I got my first dog from him. He’s very knowledgeable and actually cares about the right fit for the dog and family. In fact, we just got a second dog from him for my daughter. Again, he made sure it was a fit for both. I would highly recommend Kris. There’s no way you can go wrong. By no means am I a dog expert, however I’ve been around more than enough dog trainers and dogs to know good from bad. Kris is definitely one of the good ones, trust me.

Exceptional training, incredible results, and a team that truly cares. If you want a well-trained, happy dog and the knowledge to maintain it at home, Taylor Made Working Dogs is the best decision you can make. We adopted our Rottweiler puppy, Meli, 13 months ago, and Kris Taylor and the team at Taylor Made Working Dogs have been instrumental from day one. From the very beginning of the adoption process through raising a high-energy puppy, Kris was always available—often via text—whenever I had questions about behavior or needed guidance on how to encourage or correct something. We’ve done both puppy board-and-train and adult board-and-train programs, and the results speak for themselves. Our friends and family are constantly amazed that a 13-month-old Rottweiler can be this obedient, focused, and well trained. There’s no way we could have made it through the past year without Kris and his team. Meli also LOVES Taylor Made Raw dog food. She’s been on it since she was a puppy and has grown into a healthy, strong dog who genuinely gets excited for mealtime. On top of that, we board her at Taylor Made when we travel—and she is thrilled every time. Once she realizes where we’re going, she can’t wait to jump out of the car and be with Kris and the team. We’ve worked with other trainers in the past, and lesson learned. With Taylor Made, you don’t just get a better-trained dog—you learn how to work with your dog so they’re happier and truly thrive at home. If you’re considering board-and-train or need help correcting behaviors, this is absolutely the place to go. I only wish we had found Kris sooner. Go with Taylor Made Working Dogs—you won’t regret it!

Protection Dog FAQs

How much does a protection dog cost?

Our trained protection dogs are typically $46,000–$66,000 or above, including delivery, in-person handler training, and ongoing support. Protection dogs are a premium, highly specialized investment. Pricing reflects the time, development, and level of training required to produce a reliable, real-world protection dog. Each placement includes the trained dog, in-person delivery, handler training, and continued support to support long-term success.

As each dog progresses, we continuously assess training level, environmental confidence, and how drive presents in real-world situations. This allows us to understand each dog’s strengths and determine the role where they will perform best.

Every placement is intentional. Whether a client needs an estate protection dog or a stable, well-mannered companion capable of public access, we match the dog’s temperament, energy, and capabilities to the environment where it will thrive and perform reliably.

What is the training process like?

Our dogs are trained in real-world environments, not just controlled settings. Training includes advanced off-leash obedience, protection on command and by threat, environmental exposure, and scenario-based work. The focus is always on clarity, control, and reliability, not aggression.

Novice: Early protection training including foundational obedience, responsiveness, bark on command, and initial bite work.

Basic: Reliable obedience with sit, down, recall, loose-leash heeling, place, and household manners, with progressing protection work.

Advanced Protection: Off-leash obedience integrated into real-life scenarios such as home defense, public environments, and vehicle situations.

Expert Protection: Fully developed protection dog with high-level obedience, control, and the ability to function across family, estate, and executive protection roles.

What makes a protection dog different from a trained dog?

A trained dog can follow commands in controlled environments. A protection dog is developed to perform reliably under pressure and in real-world situations. This includes environmental stability, clear-headed decision-making, and the ability to respond appropriately to legitimate threats while remaining safe and controlled in everyday life.

Who can benefit from a trained protection dog?

Protection dogs are well suited for families, executives, property owners, and individuals who prioritize security and peace of mind. They are especially valuable for those with larger properties, higher visibility, or a need for dependable, real-world protection.

Are protection dogs safe around families and children?

Yes. Properly trained protection dogs are stable, controlled, and safe in the home. They are taught to distinguish between normal daily interactions and legitimate threats, allowing them to integrate into family life while maintaining their protective capability.

What commands and capabilities do your dogs have?

Our dogs are trained in advanced obedience and protection work, including off-leash control, recall, place, and directional commands. Protection capabilities include responding to threats, controlled engagement, and immediate disengagement on command, ensuring both effectiveness and control.

Can your dogs perform in real-world environments?

Yes. Our training emphasizes real-world exposure, including public environments, varied terrain, and unpredictable situations. This ensures each dog can perform reliably outside of controlled training settings, where real protection matters most.

Training, Temperament & Development

How do you select and evaluate your protection dogs?

At Taylor Made Working Dogs, every dog goes through a meticulous selection and development process from an early age. We evaluate temperament, drive, structure, health, and long-term potential, sourcing German Shepherds from proven working lines with the stability and clarity required for protection work.

What training levels do your dogs progress through?

Entry / Puppy / Green: Early in development with little to no formal training. Evaluated for health, temperament, and working potential.

What temperament types do you evaluate?

Aloof: Independent, composed, and reserved. Focused on handler over social interaction.

Nervy: Displays fear, instability, or reactivity. Not suited for most environments.

Open: Social, confident, and expressive. Capable of working in both protection and public-facing roles with proper training.

What drive levels do you evaluate?

No Drive: Minimal motivation beyond basic needs.

Low Drive: Calm and steady, suited for lower-intensity roles.

Medium Drive: Balanced, focused, and adaptable. Ideal for most protection roles.

High Drive: Intense and demanding. Best suited for experienced handlers or advanced working environments.

What do endurance and strength of drive mean?

Endurance of Drive: The ability to sustain focus and intensity over time.

Strength of Drive: The willingness to push through pressure, obstacles, and discomfort to complete a task.

Is health a focus for Personal Protection Dogs?

Yes. Health and structural soundness are foundational to long-term performance. We prioritize dogs that can maintain durability, stability, and consistent behavior over time.

Do you provide support after placement?

Yes. Every placement includes in-person handler training and continued support to ensure a smooth transition and long-term success.

What is the next step?

The next step is to contact us to begin the process. We’ll learn about your lifestyle, environment, and goals, then guide you toward the right dog and placement approach.
