How do you evaluate temperament and drive?

At Taylor Made Working Dogs, we take a comprehensive approach to evaluate each dog, ensuring we understand their unique characteristics and determine their most suitable role. We consider their current training level, age, unique temperament, drive levels, and how their drive manifests. This thorough evaluation ensures that each dog is placed in an environment that meets their needs, giving them the best opportunity to thrive and excel in their designated role. Below is a detailed guide outlining our benchmarks for each working line dog. For instance, if you’re seeking an estate protection dog, you’ll want a dog with specific qualities, such as aloof or open temperament and medium drive and energy.  On the other hand, if you’re looking for a well-behaved family dog capable of excelling in public gatherings or vacations, you’ll be looking for specific traits, like open temperament and low drive and energy.

Entry/Puppy/Green—This dog is at an early stage of training and has little to no valuable skills. It may have undergone some tests but lacks formal training. At this stage, the dog is a blank canvas, ready to be shaped into the role you desire. With the right training and guidance, it can develop into a highly skilled working dog.

Novice – This dog is in the early stages of protection training, where it is learning essential obedience commands, developing its grip, building drive and responsiveness, working on bite development, and being taught to bark on command.

Basic: This accomplished dog has successfully completed beginner training and has mastered fundamental obedience commands including sit, down, recall/come when called, loose leash heeling, place, and basic manners such as avoiding jumping and respecting furniture boundaries. Additionally, the dog has made significant advancements in protection training, showcasing a high level of functionality and skill.

Advanced Protection: This dog has successfully completed all basic training exercises and has now transitioned into the public access training phase. During this phase, the dog is taught to apply its training in real-life scenarios such as break-ins, home invasions, public attacks, muggings, and carjackings. The dog is making significant progress in incorporating its obedience training into off-leash cues and commands, particularly in public spaces.

Expert Protection:  This highly trained dog has surpassed basic and intermediate training levels and has seamlessly assimilated into various facets of life, including family, personal, executive, business, and estate protection. It has achieved the capability to be off-leash and respond to verbal commands. Additionally, this dog has undergone comprehensive public access training and exhibits a remarkable level of obedience, enabling it to fulfill the role of a service dog that can accompany you anywhere.

Temperament Types

These temperaments are entirely genetic

Aloof – This dog is independent and composed, exhibiting a calm and unconcerned demeanor. It is more focused on its bond with its handler than on socializing with others, displaying a reserved nature. While not particularly affectionate with strangers, it is neither fearful nor aggressive toward people or other animals. This temperament is well-suited for individual owners or couples and can also thrive in a family environment. Additionally, it is well-behaved in public settings.

Nervy – The term “nervy” describes a dog that may exhibit signs of shyness, fear, timidity, or aggression. When confronted with new people, animals, environments, or changes in their handler’s mood or attitude, these dogs may respond by biting, fleeing, or submitting. Due to their temperament, nervy dogs are best suited for individuals or couples and may not thrive in family or socially active environments.

Open” – This exuberant dog is always ready to eagerly greet everyone and everything, exuding an infectious energy that lights up any environment. Its carefree nature and boundless enthusiasm make it a delightful companion for any activity. This dog effortlessly commands attention in every situation, truly a rockstar in its own right. While it may require additional training and dedication to thrive in personal, executive, estate, or guard dog roles, its inherent capabilities, coupled with the right motivation and guidance, make it more than up to the task.

Drive Levels

No Drive The dog lacks the drive to pursue anything beyond the bare necessities for survival. Its motivation seems to be entirely focused on meeting its basic needs.

Low Drive The concept of “low drive” in dogs is frequently misconstrued as meaning they have no drive at all. A dog with low drive does possess some level of motivation, but it may only be sufficient to carry out requested actions. For example, the dog may sit and then accept food or a ball, but it will not display high enthusiasm in doing so. Dogs with low drive are best suited for roles that require calm and steady behavior, such as therapy or service dogs.

Medium Drive – Dogs with a medium drive possess a level of motivation that makes them highly adaptable and focused. They have the optimal combination of determination and willingness to succeed, making them well-suited for excelling in various activities, such as top-level competitions and providing exceptional personal, estate, family, business, executive protection, as well as law enforcement and military support. Their adaptability ensures they can excel in a variety of roles, giving you confidence in their capabilities.

High-drive – dogs are like the Formula One race cars of the dog world, and they require the expertise of experienced handlers. They may not be the best fit for new or intermediate handlers, or for families seeking a companion. They can be suitable in a guard dog situation, but their true potential is unlocked by handlers who are competent and experienced enough to bring out the best in them. These dogs are a challenge and are best suited for very high-level competition trainers. Their purpose is to showcase their overwhelming capabilities and contribute to the lineage of working breeds. These dogs lack self-preservation, and their entire life, goal, and purpose is to relentlessly pursue what they desire.

Operations of drive

Endurance of Drive – Dogs showcasing a high endurance of drive possess the remarkable ability to uphold and sustain their intensity and determination over an extended period. This allows them to tenaciously strive towards fulfilling their needs and aspirations persistently.

Strength of drive

“Strength of Drive” in a dog can be observed in its unwavering determination to achieve its desires. This determination manifests as the dog persistently pursuing its goals, even in the face of obstacles, discomfort, pain, adverse surroundings, or potential consequences. This high level of drive is characterized by the dog’s refusal to be deterred by any challenges it may encounter.
